Our mom is involved in Variety, so we’ve had a chance to see all of the great efforts to raise money to allow children with special needs to gain mobility. Last summer, we enlisted several of our friends to put together a summer of activities to raise money for Variety with the goal of purchasing an adaptive bike for a child. We all spent the summer doing lemonade stands, ice cream socials, bake sales, etc. We then held one big event – a Bingo Night fundraiser. We invited Variety families, our own friends and families and the community. We were able to raise enough money to present an adaptive bike to a child, and it was so special to see this child loving and enjoying the new bike.

My favorite memory of Variety was watching my daughter the moment she fell in love with philanthropy. We were at a Variety gift presentation, and when she saw the joy on the boy’s face (as he was riding a bike for the first time), I could see the empathy and compassion on her face. Since that moment, my daughter and I have shared many other moments of helping other children through Variety, and it’s a very special part of our mother-daughter relationship.

My son will be turning 2 next week and he just happens to have Down syndrome. This means he was born Awesome. He’s just like any two year old. He’s running around and chasing our poor cats everywhere. I turned to Variety to see about getting him an iPad to help develop his speech and work on problem solving. He received it last week. He’s already making more sounds and can navigate through some of his apps by himself. This has made such a huge improvement in just a few short days. I’m so grateful for the donation to help him achieve his milestones. Having a child born with an extra chromosome just means he has extra super powers. With Variety donating his iPad it has helped to make those powers soar!!!

One of my favorite memories from Variety has been the bike drive a few years ago. I got to dress up in the heart costume and get a ton of bikes from generous people to eager kids. It was freezing but it was 100% worth it because from then on I have become more involved with a community I like to call my family.
