Run For Kids Who Can’t: Zach

#RunRoyal

Variety Children’s Charity is this year’s benefactor for the Royals Charities’ 5k, and we’re ecstatic about it. The annual 5k takes place at Kauffman Stadium, going around The K and Arrowhead complexes, and ending around the track down on the baseball field. This year our focus is teamwork, and the fact that success is so much sweeter when you have a group to share it with.

Meet Ricky

ricky

Today’s spotlight kid is Ricky. He is 18 years old and has Cerebral Palsy and Scoliosis, which affects Ricky’s muscle tone, movement, and posture, and Scoliosis is common in those who have Cerebal Palsy. Ricky has been a Variety child since he was just two years old.  Variety has helped his family purchase every wheelchair he has owned, which would not have been possible with out fundraising and our amazing volunteers. Through the Royals Charities 5k, you can help Ricky and other kids get the equipment they need for their specific conditions. Ricky was the inspiration for the Adaptive Baseball Fields so that kids of all shapes and sizes can participate in “America’s Favorite Pastime.” Ricky is headed off to The University of Kansas this fall. We know he will do great things and inspire all those around him.

Today’s spotlight kid is Elijah.  Elijah has become an irreplaceable part of our community as a volunteer for Variety for the last four years.  Despite being diagnosed with Caudal Regression Syndrome, which causes a deformation of the sacrum, he is the life of the party at all of our events.  Now 14 years old, one of Elijah’s favorite pastimes is racing his adaptive bike (which was purchased by Variety!) wherever he goes.  By signing up for the Royals Charities 5K race you can run or walk and help another kid enjoy the pleasures of biking just like Elijah!
