Why I am involved with Variety: I would say I’m involved with Variety for two reasons: the kids and Deb.  You cannot watch the impact of the gifts that Variety provides to these kids and families and not want to get involved.  Then of course, Deb.  Her energy is infectious and her passion is second to none.  I’ve worked with many, many charities in KC and I have never seen anything like it.

Most memorable Variety moment: Because of his involvement with Variety, my son got to throw out the first pitch at a Royal’s game. This was a once in a lifetime experience and an opportunity I wouldn’t have been able to give him without the help and support of Variety volunteers.

Why I love Variety: Because Variety LOVES kids!

 

Why I am involved with Variety:  I became involved with Variety after the program helped my family to purchase a wheelchair for my son. Upon my first interactions with the group, it was apparent that Variety volunteers love children and are willing to work hard to provide opportunities for all kids. Initially I began to volunteer, making an effort to give back to a program that gave to us in a time of need. Within a short period of time I grew to love the feeling I got when I was able to see first-hand what a difference Variety makes in the lives of families.  It’s very self rewarding, and I meet new families with wonderful kids, developing friendships that will last a lifetime. It is an honor to be able to work with a group of professionals who are as dedicated, caring, compassionate, loving,  and genuine as the Variety Board of Directors.

Started at Dickinson Theatres December of 1979 as an usher. Worked my way up to manager at the Glenwood Theatre in Overland Park Kansas, where I met my wife. I continued for Dickinson while obtaining my bachelor’s degree in Business at the University of Kansas. I worked as a theatre manager until October of 1992, when I was promoted to the film department at Dickinson. In 1998 I was promoted to Head Film buyer for the company. In 2000 there was an employee buyout of the company and I became Executive Vice President of Film and Marketing as well as a minority shareholder. In January of 2012 I bought the remaining shares of Dickinson and became the sole owner of the company. We currently have 15 locations with 178 screens in 7 states.

Why I love Variety: I love Variety because as a volunteer, I get to see the direct impact of the time and effort we exert and money we raise in an individual Variety child’s smile when they receive their gift of freedom and mobility.

Most Memorable Variety Moment: During Hooray for the Holidays in 2013, we had the opportunity to film a number of families and children who have been impacted by the organization. I left so inspired and grateful to be a part of the organization in some small part!

Why I Love Variety: Because Variety has a tremendous impact on children with special needs and their families – and it’s wonderful to see how the organization has touched so many individuals in the Kansas City area!
