Help children with special needs feel included
Variety exists to help children with developmental disabilities feel and truly be included in the Kansas City community. In addition to providing special needs children with mobility and communication devices, we create opportunities for these children to interact with one another and other Kansas Citians.
- Variety Playground and adaptive baseball fields – Thanks to your generous donations, Variety was able to raise $450,000 and help create three spaces where physically-able and disabled children can play together. In 2013, we partnered with MLB Funds, Independence Parks & Recreation and the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation to build two adaptive baseball fields (one in Independence and one in Olathe) and a playground (in Independence) for children two to four years old. Thank you to our wonderful sponsors: Greater Kansas City Auto Dealers Association!
- Check out the Variety Playground in Independence – The first Destination and Inclusive Playground for ALL kids of all abilities!
- Variety events – With the help of our wonderful volunteers, Variety plans and hosts events throughout the year to provide safe and welcoming places for children with developmental disabilities and their families to go. These events include theatre camps, movie nights, Starlight performances, pumpkin patch visits, Pumpkin patch visits, Hooray for the Holidays and professional sporting events – like Royals and Chiefs games.
- Variety-sponsored programs – Variety also sponsors an adaptive soccer team called Blue Valley TEAMsoccer as well as soap box derby races and airplane rides for children with developmental disabilities.
