Meet the Kids – Jacob!

Jacob has Down Syndrome. This means he has delays in cognitive development and function. One of Jake’s biggest challenges is in communicating with other people. Based on our own experience, and that of therapists with whom he has worked, we know he has good receptive communication. This means he understands things that are told or shown him. He also is able to learn things on his own, such as how to connect game systems, sound systems and other various electronic components. He biggest challenge is in communicating what he knows, how he feels, etc, back to others. We have had some experience in the past working with various devices to aid in his communication efforts and have seen notable improvements when used consistently.

Our primary long-term goal for Jake is to have an ability to function and interact in his community in meaningful ways, both socially and professionally. The ability to communicate with others is crucial to realizing this goal and is the skill with which Jake needs the most help. This ipad would be a very important tool in helping him achieve that goal.

Jake has a smile for everyone and is one of the most enjoyable, easy-going people you would ever meet. He made friends easily while in school and even helped shape the futures of some of the “typically functioning” students with whom he worked with during school. We’ve had several of these students tell us they have altered their college plans to include majors or minors in special education BECAUSE of their time with Jake. So the fact he has had such an impact on the lives of others fills us with gratitude.

In his free time, Jake enjoys playing video games, walking our dogs and helping us run errands such as grocery shopping and car washes. He also loves going to QuikTrip for his favorite snack (two taquitos and a drink!). He enjoys both watching sports and participating in sports. Over the years he has participated in soccer, baseball, track, basketball and bocce. His favorite professional teams are the Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs!

In general, Jake is very loving and helpful. He has been an immense joy in our lives for the past 19 years and we can’t imagine what our lives would have been like without him!
