Learn about Emerson and his story…

Emerson Bishop is a 20 year old young man. Despite his health and physical disabilities he wants to live a normal and complete life as possible. He faced great challenges in life as he has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. His illness has taken away his ability to stand and walk. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a progressive muscular disease that robs the person of the ability to use any of their muscles in their body. Emerson lives with his Dad, Mom and two dogs. He and his family enjoy spending time together doing various activities like any normal young man. He loves to go hunting and fishing. His Dad has done many things to help him be able to hunt from his chair. He got him an off road power chair that makes it so he can go in the dirt and mud with great ease so he can hunt and fish.

He was diagnosed with this disease at 9 years old. At that time he was walking and running, and playing sports with his friends. He lost his ability to stand and walk at 14 years old. Emerson is an incredible young man who has great perseverance despite his diagnosis. He attended Raymore Peculiar high school and graduated with his diploma. Emerson played tennis from his power chair on the high school team freshman and sophomore year. When he was unable to keep up with his peers he began to be the high school tennis team manager so he could cheer on his friends. His Junior and Senior year of high school he also managed the high school football team. He has never given up his positive attitude despite the many obstacles he overcame. Learning to drive was important to Emerson, and he was able to learn with hand controls. Emerson has faced adversity most of his life but with his positive attitude he is able to carry on and do the things he loves.
