At Variety KC, our mission is to make sure every child can be active, included, and feel a true sense of belonging. One powerful way we do this is by providing adaptive bikes to kids with disabilities—offering freedom, confidence, and joy to children who might otherwise miss out on the simple childhood experience of riding a bike.
The Impact of Adaptive Bikes
Adaptive bikes are more than just bikes—they are life-changing tools that promote independence, physical activity, and social inclusion. For children with disabilities, a standard bike often isn’t an option, and adaptive bikes—which can cost upwards of $4,500—are typically not covered by insurance.
That’s where Variety KC steps in. Through our My Mobility Program, we offer grants to help families afford critical medical equipment—including custom adaptive bikes—so that kids can safely explore their world and join in with their peers.
Meet Oliver
This April, we were thrilled to present an adaptive bike to Oliver, a bright and energetic second grader who has autism and ADHD. For Oliver, riding a bike not only supports physical development and coordination, but also helps him manage focus and sensory needs in a fun and meaningful way.
His new adaptive bike is more than just a gift—it’s a symbol of freedom. Now, Oliver can ride alongside his friends and family, experience the outdoors more independently, and enjoy the movement and stimulation that benefits his mind and body. Moments like these remind us why our work is so important.
